Have you ever felt like you’re caught in a whirlpool? You’re swimming as hard as you can, but you just keep going round and round and round. You’re getting tired, you’re still above water, but you start thinking, why am I even doing this? Am I going to go under? You need to start thinking about some ideas on how to make your art business a success.
Then somebody comes along, throws you a line and hauls you out. You’re exhausted, grateful, and relieved. And only after you were sitting there on the shore, thinking about what you were doing, did you finally realize that you were even in a whirlpool in the first place.
Is your art business “stuck?” The Profit Canvas is here to rescue you!
The Artists In Business Profit Canvas Mentorship Program is that rescue line. We understand you’re super talented, you work hard, you’re following your dream, AND WE ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT! We are HUGE FANS OF ARTISTS. It’s why we do what we do, it’s why we developed our successful art business program, and it’s why we’re here to do everything in our power to ensure that your art business NEVER gets caught in the whirlpool. (Just ask any of our students from the Profit Canvas, but more on that later!).
The Profit Canvas is a program created by Alexis Fedor to help artists create long-term, sustainable businesses for their art online. One of the things that makes AIB’s Profit Canvas Mentorship Program so unique and effective is that we understand artists because WE ARE ARTISTS. You get to learn how to build your business with your art from someone who knows how to actually build a business as an artist.
What makes the Profit Canvas such a Successful Art Business Program, is that when you join, not only do you get personalized instruction and comprehensive strategy sessions crafted specifically to help you to make your art business a success, but you also become part of a close-knit community of like-minded artists.
We LOVE our community, it’s one of the things we are most proud of, and we know you’ll love it too. If you run into a problem, have a question, or maybe you’re just looking for support? Our community of students from the Profit Canvas and alumni are always just a click, message, dm, or call away.
As the English poet, John Donne said, “No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent.” And WOMEN John! Get with the times! (And of course, transgender, gender neutral, non-binary, agender, pangender, genderqueer, two-spirit, third gender, or however, you identify).
You’ll experience such relief when you realize that a lot of artists may be going through the same issues that you may be experiencing.
Alexis Fedor majored in and performed Modern Dance at Ohio University and has worked as a writer and performance artist in New York City with some of the best theatre and dance companies, as well as film and television. She completely understands the struggle because she’s been there too!
Though Alexis is a successful entrepreneur, businesswoman, consultant, and mentor today, in the past she too found herself flailing, smack in the middle of that whirlpool.
Long before Artists in Business and the Profit Canvas was born, when Alexis launched her first company, called Love and Water Designs, she had no idea why her marketing plan didn’t take off, or why her offers weren’t converting into sales.
She had a t-shirt company that so many people were excited about and seemed enthused by, but her sales were too low to carry on past the first-year mark. (Below is a photo of one of her t-shirt designs, come on people, it looks fantastic, doesn’t it??)

It was only years later that Alexis realized why her first two companies failed: because she didn’t know enough about her Ideal Buyers or her own Signature Story. EVERY successful art business program MUST cover these two topics.
Communicating with your Ideal Buyers with a laser-like focus is absolutely critical to the success of your art business. These are the first people who are going to pay attention, listen, support, make purchases, and cheer you on in your endeavours. Unfortunately, many artists make the mistake of blasting a bullhorn to the whole world, hoping someone will listen- this is not a productive use of your time. It will yield far fewer results than figuring out the best way to hone in on your Ideal Buyers. (Hone people, hone!)
Your Signature Story is your North Star when it comes to your art business. Your Signature Story will guarantee you stay on course no matter what throws you off-kilter.
While making Artists In Business into the successful venture that it is today, Alexis faced a lot of adversity. At one point she had lost her entire life savings, almost her entire immediate family, and her sense of self.
Her life and business felt like it was in utter chaos. She was anxious and scared and felt like she had amnesia when it came to figuring out her next strategic decisions. But her signature story was able to ground her through it all.
That’s why the Signature Story is one of the first lessons Artists In Business shares in the Profit Canvas Mentorship Program and the reason hundreds of artists in the program have been able to build five and six-figure businesses.

So… what do you do when confronted with failure? Give up? Succumb to the raging waters? Cry, watch 90 Day Fiancé, and binge on an ungodly amount of Swedish Fish? No! You reflect, learn, compose yourself, and like the powerful Phoenix that you are, rise from the ashes!
“You may encounter many defeats, but you must not be defeated. In fact, it may be necessary to encounter the defeats, so you can know who you are, what you can rise from, how you can still come out of it.” ― Maya Angelou
Alexis decided to rise from the ashes by beginning to work for a man named Roger Webster who owned a successful PR company in NYC. Roger became her mentor and taught her how to bridge the gaps that were keeping her t-shirt business from growing through the work he had her do in his company. (If only she had met him before! Just LOOK at that gorgeous t-shirt! 😂😂😂)

After spending a year working for Roger, Alexis started her own consulting company to help businesses worth between $2-$5 million do the same: growing their online marketing revenue by sharing their Signature Story and understanding better who their Ideal Buyers were and what they wanted and needed.
She did this for six years to great success- over $20 million in revenue for the four clients she helped grow.
She then spent a year applying the same principles to her own editing business and made six figures doing so.
This is what led her to create the successful art business program she always dreamed of. It would be a program that would help artists create the same kind of successful businesses she had helped oversee with their art online.
Alexis’s desire to help artists can be traced back to a pivotal moment in her life: ballet class at Ohio University. Her professor, Mickey, was a consummate jokester. One day, she casually addressed the dancers in class and said, “You’re all going to be happy for the rest of your lives as dancers because it’s the best life to live! You’re going to be really broke- but really happy!”
Everyone burst out laughing, except for Alexis, whose face contorted into a frozen smile of sheer, wild-eyed panic. She looked around the room thinking, why isn’t everyone screaming right now? How is it that all of these incredibly accomplished, confident women are okay with the idea that their lives as dancers are going to be ravaged by starvation, squalor, and waiting tables at Lenny’s Diner at age sixty-five?
From then on, she made a promise to herself that she would do everything in her power to ensure that no artist would ever again believe that they couldn’t run a financially successful art business. You don’t have to be a math whiz, you don’t need an M.B.A. from Stanford, you just need passion, commitment, and a great plan!
The first step on Alexis’s journey to creating Artists In Business started with a Facebook group and a course called the 14-Day Art Biz Challenge, which helped artists put the foundation of their online business together in 14 days. That’s right everybody, two weeks can CHANGE YOUR LIFE!
This evolved, through feedback from her students and learning what helped them grow the most, into the Profit Canvas. This is the Profit Canvas story.
Here’s what makes it, in our opinion, the most successful art business program:
There is core-course material that lays the foundation for building your online business as an artist. Many artists and students from the Profit Canvas liken it to a college course because it is so detailed and comprehensive.
In that respect it is like many other online courses: it teaches everything you need to know about the specific topic at hand.
But what sets this experience apart from others is the mentorship piece. Everybody needs a mentor: just think about actors, even the most famous, successful and influential of them have acting coaches to lead and guide them and help them grow!
First, Alexis realizes that no two students in the profit canvas are alike. Every artist’s business is going to be different because every artist is different- and the business must match the artistic vision and mission of the artist.
Second, no one needs all the material in the course at the same time- each person is starting at a different place so need different parts of the course to optimize their growth. The Profit Canvas Mentorship Program has helped everyone from performance artists, to painters, NFT creators, photographers, voiceover artists, and ceramists, (you get the idea), so we know that there is no single blanket that covers everybody! Each person needs their very own blankie! 😉
So before starting the Profit Canvas course each artist receives a personalized session that breaks down their main objectives and gives them a roadmap of what lessons in the course to focus on to help them achieve their personal goals.
Then, there are weekly live coaching calls for the duration of the course where Alexis focuses on each person’s needs in a group session. This helps every artist in the program synthesize their needs with the rest of the group and grow individually and with the support of their newly found art business community. Oooooh, you’d LOVE our community of artists and students from the profit canvas!
Finally, there is a coaching group in a private online setting that enables every artist to ask questions and post feedback as they move through their personal journey in the program. THAT’S what is why these mentorships make your art business a success.
You need to have a positive attitude in order to be successful in business. Business growth can be challenging, so be prepared for challenges and setbacks. Can we work together to overcome our challenges? Yes, you can and it’s not as hard as you think! We make decisions based on our emotions, but we later learn that we were only thinking out loud. I passed with your help!
If it is hard to achieve your goals, it can be difficult to stick to your original plan. If you keep working and facing challenges, you will eventually achieve your goals. Some artists find themselves in a difficult situation where they are facing their inner blocks and feeling overwhelmed. Many students have experienced financial hardship. It is common to feel anxious and stressed during times of stress. Alexis can help you reduce the amount of overwhelm and get more done in a shorter amount of time. In order to be successful in business, you need to be able to work smarter, not harder. If you want to be successful as an artist, you need to find a way to make your business work.
Over the next two years, Laurel committed to the Profit Canvas framework and to growing her business. Following her lead as inspiration is how you can make your art business a success.
First, she outlined her building blocks: her Signature Story, Master Offer & Ideal clients.
With this in mind, Laurel began to expand her offerings. I used to enjoy painting as a child. I started developing e-courses that gave my clients the joy and vibrancy they loved in my art. She was able to generate a reliable income by selling her paintings and prints. She sells her products at a variety of price points but also plans to expand her product line. Laurel has a wide range of printing options, including original, commissions, and custom-designed murals.
The Profit Canvas Mentorship Program was crucial in helping illuminate the way.
Now let’s look at another one of our students from the profit canvas, Kelli Folsom, a super-talented oil painter. Ever since graduating from art school in 2012, Kelli had earned her living by selling and teaching art.
But in 2016, her income started to disappear.
The galleries that held her paintings began to close. So, her art sales took a nosedive. She tried everything she could think of to get back on her feet, but nothing seemed to be working.
She found a way to find collectors who love her work, buy it regularly, and don’t ask for discounts. After talking to these clients, she realized they weren’t buying her art because it was “too expensive.”
Kelly became a VIP member of the Artists In Business program and eventually opened her own studio in Denver.
Isn’t she incredible?? Those are just examples of how to make your art business a success.

Profit Canvas Alum Angela Maritz:
“ I believed I did not have the skills to find my ideal client or to market to them. I feel like I am now the owner of my business, and not essentially working in it.
Profit Canvas Alum Jane Johnson:
“BIG WIN! At ASK in January Alexis asked me what was holding me back or stopping me from starting my class. I really had no good reason as I have been formulating this for a good while in my head. I am an organizer in my head but not so good on paper and time. During the weekend we had break-out seasons and I started contacting people through FB and IG. Well, today I got enough people to have my first online class! It is a GO! Thank you, Alexis!”
